Obituary

Douglas (Doug) Ora Roof, age 68, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away on June 30, 2024 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Doug was born on May 13, 1956 to Colonel Ora W. Roof and Mrs. Marjorie Wingerter Roof in Columbus, Ohio. After Doug graduated from Fairmont High School in 1974, he went on to study at Wright State University and the Ohio Institute of Photography. After school, Doug had a successful career in finance and sales.

In 1975, Doug met Toni Marie Reno in Dayton, Ohio. Doug and Toni married in 1977, and went on to have two children, Christina Marie Roof and Eric Nicholas Roof. Doug and Toni enjoyed 48 years together at the time of his passing.

While Doug was incredibly successful in business, he also had many other hobbies. At a young age Doug started playing ice hockey and quickly became a skilled goal keeper. Doug’s passion for hockey continued well into his thirties and he even had the position of goalie for a Semi Professional Hockey Team in Cincinnati, Ohio. But Doug’s love of adventure didn’t stop with hockey. He was also an avid skydiver when he was younger. Doug passed his love of adventure on to his children, Christina and Eric.

What many people don’t know about Doug is how much he loved animals and doing volunteer work for those less fortunate. Doug was always helping stray or injured animals. He would be the first to pull over on a highway to save a stray dog from being hit and would even bring lost dogs and cats home until he could find their owners or get them the care they needed. He also volunteered to make and serve food to the homeless and so much more. Doug had a very big heart.

As Doug’s life as an adventurer started to catch up with his body he was gifted a Service Dog, Felix, to assist him with mobility and other daily tasks. Felix and Doug were inseparable until Felix’s passing in 2021. Our family finds comfort in knowing they have been reunited in death.

Doug was preceded in death by his father, United States Army Col. Ora W. Roof and his mother, Marjorie M. Roof. He is survived by his wife, Toni M. Roof, daughter Christina M. Roof, son Eric N. (Shannon) Roof, grandchildren, Alaina and Henry Roof, as well as his brothers, David W. (Birdie) Roof, Gary E. (Douglas) Roof and Craig L. Roof.

A Memorial Service will be held for Doug on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 5:00 PM. Visitation from 4:00 PM until the time of service at Tobias Funeral Home- Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45429.
